"This is a great loss to the hospital and the community," said Don Johnston, chair of Northern Nevada Medical Center's board of governors. Jim Pagels will be remembered for his leadership, commitment to staff and patients and many contributions to healthcare in our area." Jim Pagels was known as an innovative, resourceful leader with a uniquely open and approachable style. His "can-do" style was epitomized by one of his favorite quotes from former UCLA coach John Wooden: "Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do." Never hesitant to roll up his sleeves to accomplish what needed to be done, he enthusiastically joined staff during the predawn hours on April 14, 2003, to help move into the hospital's newly completed ER expansion. Pagels joined Northern Nevada Medical Center as chief executive officer in January 1997, returning to the hospital where he had served as director of finance during its opening years, from 1983 to 1986. During more than six years at the helm, Pagels was recognized for fostering a culture of excellent service and the success of new programs and growth, including the 2003 opening of a significant ER and diagnostic imaging expansion. Pagels' previous positions included roles as chief operating officer and chief financial officer of University Medical Center in Las Vegas and corporate director of finance for Washoe Health System. In addition, his healthcare career encompassed positions as chief financial officer, regional controller and chief operating officer in various hospitals throughout the country.
A Nevadan since 1973, Pagels received his bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Nevada, Reno, and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix. He was a certified public accountant. He was married and the father of four children. Jim Pagels' motivation of staff and dedication to patients and families will live on as Northern Nevada Medical Center continues its mission of quality healthcare that forever will be inspired by his legacy.
